Refrigerant is why a fridge is different
Federal rules put the duty on the last stop in the chain: a scrap recycler or landfill has to make sure refrigerant was recovered before disposal. If a unit shows up already evacuated, that site keeps a signed statement (EPA).
Leave the sealed system alone. Rio Rancho's WM landfill, for one, turns away refrigerators with Freon and wants a certificate if it was removed. Ask us where yours is going and we will tell you.
Try PNM first if it still runs
If you are a PNM customer and the unit works, even barely, PNM offers a $75 check and free haul-away. It needs to be 10 to 30 cubic feet, empty, unplugged and easy to reach, with the water line disconnected. Limit two per household. PNM can change this, so check the page.
A dead fridge does not qualify. Neither does one that needs to go tomorrow if PNM cannot get there in time.
What the crew needs from you
Empty the shelves and the door bins, and pull the magnets. Unplug it the night before so the freezer can thaw, and leave a towel down for the drip. If there is an ice maker line, turn off its valve. Tell us about the kitchen door, any turn into the hallway, and any steps. We tape the doors shut and strap the unit to a dolly, because a fridge door swinging open on a stair is how walls get hurt.

Will the City take a fridge?
Its large item pickup does, for its residential customers, at the curb, empty with the doors taped. Don Reservoir, one of the City's convenience centers, cannot receive refrigerators.
Do you take chest freezers?
Yes, and they count as a refrigerator job. Empty it and let it thaw first.
